Iao Valley State Park
A visit to Hawaii is not complete without appreciating the culture and history of the gorgeous islands. And of course, Maui features its own unique culture and history with foundations of heiaus (ancient sites of worship) still standing as well as sites of significant moments in Hawaii's history.
On top of being a breathtaking location for a hike, Iao Valley State Park was the site of the Battle of Kepaniwai of 1790, during which King Kamehameha I defeated Kalanikūpule of Maui in his effort to unite all the Hawaiian Islands. Today, visitors can respectfully experience Maui's vibrant culture and history by experiencing locations like the Iao Valley as well as taking tours, enjoying local restaurants, and more!
