Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole
The life and legacy of Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole is of great importance to the history and cultre of Maui! Born just 3 months before Hawaii became the 50th state, IZ would become a unifying force for the people of Hawaii and a voice known and loved around the world. He began his career in music by performing at Steamboats in Waikiki at the early age of 10 years old. As a teen, he joined together with John Koko (a fellow schoolboy) to form the Makaha Sons of Ni’ihau which would become a successful band that would record 21 albums, win Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, and become a prominent force in the Hawaiian music industry.
In 1993, IZ decided to continue his career as a solo artist. During this period, he released six successful albums with his first, Facing Future, going platinum in 2005. In 2001, Alone in IZ World debuted at #1 on Billboard’s World Chart. His single “Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World” has gained particular popularity appearing in numerous films such as 50 First Dates and continues to be used in commercials and other media to this day. Israel Ka'ano'i Kamakawiwo'ole’s voice continues to be a familiar and loved one across the world brining happiness and unity to all who listen.
