What is the Best Time to Plan a Maui Honeymoon?

aerial view of Maui

Spring and fall are the two best seasons to visit Maui for your honeymoon. While the island has year-round appeal, these two seasons offer you the best weather, fewest crowds, and friendliest rates.

In spring (April – May), your days will be sunny and warm with highs in the upper 70s/low 80s. Winter’s rain showers are a thing of the past, and calm water on the sunny south shores between Maalaea and Kihei is perfect for swimming, snorkeling, or learning to surf.

Fall (September – November) brings similar conditions with slightly warmer days, closer to 80s and 90s. While it’s the start of the rainy season, those who visit earlier in the window likely won’t experience any interruptions to plans. For late fall honeymooners, you may also be among the first to see the arrival of the humpback whales! They head to the warm waters of Maui each year, and in 2025, they were spotted as early as October!

Sample 5-Day Maui Honeymoon Itinerary

If your dream honeymoon involves a little bit of everything: beach time, great restaurants, fun nightlife, cultural experiences, and scenic outings, Maui is the place to be. Below, we’ve mapped out a loose schedule with an overall "theme" for each day, and options that fit within the theme. Feel free to pick and choose the activities that work best for you!

Day 1: Arrival and Settling In

When you arrive at Kahului Airport (OGG), your first stop after baggage claim should be the rental car area. Maui has incredible scenic drives, and you’ll want to take advantage of seeing the island on your own schedule.

Most flights arrive in the late afternoon or early evening, so the best plan is to grab a bite to eat and then stock up on any essentials you’ll need for your trip—snacks, reef-safe sunscreen, toiletries, etc.

If you’re taking Highway 380 from the airport to Maalaea, we recommend lunch at Tin Roof Maui. This is a great intro to some island classics like garlic shrimp or fresh poke. Once you’re done, Costco and Walmart are nearby, so you can easily get the shopping done before continuing on to your villa. In total, the route is only about 10 miles, so if traffic is on your side, you’ll be arriving at your island oasis in 20ish minutes.

Once you’ve unpacked, the rest of the day should be relaxing on your private lanai, taking a stroll on the nearby beach, or enjoying the sunset from the pool.

Day 2: Beachside Sun and Fun

What’s a honeymoon in Maui without ample time on the beautiful beaches? If you’re staying at an I Go Maui villa, our oceanfront and beachfront properties put you steps from the longest beach on the island: Sugar Beach. With more than two miles of soft sand and calm waves, you can easily find a spot that feels totally your own.

Take this first full day to snorkel, swim, lounge in the sun, and enjoy the scenery. When you’re ready to trade the sand and salt for the day, head to the oceanfront pool for a bit before returning to your villa and getting ready for a delicious dinner out.

Local Tip: There’s no need to book a snorkeling tour in Maui. You can see incredible marine life at many of the beaches. Bring or purchase your own gear and check daily beach reports for the calmest water to decide where to spend the day.

Dinner Recommendation: Monkey Pod in Wailea

  • Best Mai Tai on the island
  • Happy Hour from 3:30 – 5 PM
  • Live music
  • Address: 10 Wailea Gateway Place

Day 3: State Parks and Scenic Gardens

Now that you’re rested and relaxed, let’s see some classic Maui sites! Start the day with an iced latte and pastry from Luxe Latte food truck before continuing on to the Iao Valley State Park. The park requires tickets, but you can purchase them day-of or up to 30 days in advance. Parking is $10, and tickets are $5.

Once you arrive, you’ll follow the paved path over a bridge before climbing roughly 133 steps to the observation area, where breathtaking views of the Iao Needle await. From this vantage point, you’ll see the entire valley, as well as nearby Wailuku

After seeing the Needle, you can spend more time hiking a river-loop trail, where you can take a dip in the water or just spend some time enjoying the scenery. When you get hungry, dining nearby at 808 Old Town is just the thing. Daily specials feature toasty sandwiches, fresh fish, and more.

On your way back from the state park, head to South Maui Gardens in Kihei. This 6-acre botanical oasis is home to weekly markets, food trucks, and the Lahaina Bird Stand, where you can meet gorgeous tropical creatures like parrots and macaws (by appointment only).

The market is held every Thursday from 9 AM to 1 PM and features everything from fresh fruit to jewelry, woodcarvings, hand-woven baskets, and more. It’s a great spot to find a perfect honeymoon keepsake.

Dinner Recommendation: Isana

  • Phenomenal sushi
  • Happy Hour from 3 PM – 5 PM every day
  • Address: 515 S Kihei Rd

 Day 4: Tours and Excursions

sunset dinner cruise maui

If you’re visiting during late fall or winter, a whale watching tour is a must. At PacWhale Eco Adventures, certified naturalists take you out on the water for close-up views of these giants of the Pacific. Along the way, you’ll see beautiful shoreline views and learn all about the whales, the migration patterns, and conservation efforts.

Not here during whale season? PacWhale still offers exceptional boating adventures. Their award-winning sunset dinner cruise is a two-hour, four-course experience complete with cocktails and stunning views.

If you’d rather stick to dry-land tours, there are many Maui farms that offer guided experiences you’ll love. Places like the Ali’i Kula Lavender Farm, Maui Tropical Plantation, and Maui Pineapple Tour feature farm-to-table experiences, peaceful, scenic grounds, and unique experiences. While places like Kupa’a Farms Coffee and Chocolate tour let you taste your way through two of Hawaii’s most prized exports.

The Road to Hana is another highly popular excursion. While doing the whole thing is daunting and can require multiple days to really make the most of the trip, you can see a portion of it by heading north to Paia. From this starting point, you’ll see Twin Falls, Waikamoi Nature Trail, and the Garden of Eden Arboretum. Turning around at mile marker 10 is often a good call for single-day outings.

For a craft experience kind of day, Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery and Maui Brewing Co let you sample island-made spirits and brews paired with salt air breezes and beautiful views.

As for dinner on day 4, we recommend grabbing a bite at Maui Brewing or the Distillery. If you’ve been looking for some nightlife activities, each of these offers enough fun to keep you entertained.

Before turning in for the night, relax on your lanai or go for a walk along Sugar Beach as you talk about your favorite tours or tastings of the day.

Day 5: Leisure and Pampering

As your honeymoon in Maui, Hawaii, draws to an end, take some time to pamper yourself before you return to reality. Choose from an in-villa massage where the team comes to you or visit a local spa for access to their full facility and treatment menu.

For an in-house couple’s massage, we recommend Luxury Massage Maui. You and your spouse will enjoy side-by-side massages, with optional add-ons of prosecco or mimosas, chocolate-covered strawberries, matching robes, silk leis, and even a mini photo shoot.

The masseuses can set up in your villa, on the lanai, or near the ocean (if your villa allows). They specialize in a variety of techniques and serve the entire island of Maui.

Our top choice for an on-site couple’s massage is Wailea Healing Center. More than just massages, they offer acupuncture, sound healing, nail treatments, and more. When booking, you can choose your preferred technique, whether you want indoor or outdoor, and the duration.

Once you’re fully relaxed, head back to your villa for time by the resort pool or on the beach.

Dinner Recommendation: Mama’s Fish House

  • Reservations are a must. They’re booked months in advance.
  • Address: 799 Poho Place, Paia, HI
  • This will undoubtedly be the best meal of your entire Maui honeymoon. Come hungry and be prepared to be wowed.

After dinner, head to Ho’Okipa Beach, nearby, for beautiful views and sea turtle sightings.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far in advance should we book flights and accommodations for a Maui honeymoon?

Book flights 3–6 months out and accommodations at least 4–6 months ahead, especially for spring and fall travel. Oceanfront villas and top resorts are often the first to sell out for honeymoon dates.

Do we really need to rent a car in Maui?

Yes. Maui is not walkable, and rideshares are limited outside resort hubs. A rental car gives you full flexibility for beaches, dining, and excursions without overpaying for transportation.

What activities in Maui require advance reservations?

Haleakalā sunrise access, Mama’s Fish House, whale watching tours (in season), and popular sunset cruises should be booked weeks or months in advance. Same-day availability is rare during peak travel windows.

When is whale watching season in Maui?

Humpback whales are typically present from December through April, with peak sightings in January and February. If whales are a priority, plan your honeymoon during these months.

Is the Road to Hana worth it on a honeymoon?

Yes—if you keep it partial. Driving as far as Paia, Twin Falls, or Garden of Eden makes for a scenic, low-stress day. A full out-and-back drive can feel exhausting and eats up an entire day.
